PERCEPTION OF FARMERS TOWARDS PANTNAGAR FARMERS’ FAIR (KISAN MELA)

Abstract

The present study was conducted in the country’s premier Agricultural University; Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar which is harbinger of green revolution in India. Farmers’ fair which is called Kisan Mela is a regular feature of this University. The present study is an evaluation study to know the perception of the farmers regarding Kisan Mela. Majority of the farmers were getting information about Kisan Mela from their neighbours, social workers and development offices and were attending mela in order to get information about new practices and to buy hybrid seeds for increasing production. It was seen that maximum percent of the farmers bought pesticides whereas more than half liked to attend Kisan Mela for getting information about new techniques.

Introduction

G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar is the first agricultural university of the country, the foundation stone of which was laid on 17th Nov. 1960 covering 16 thousand acre land area, perhaps one of the largest universities of its kind in Asia. Since its establishment, this university is rigorously performing teaching, research and extension education based on the integrated system. This university has been holding the All India Farmers’ Fair and Agro-Industrial Exhibition twice in a year for 4-days each time, in Kharif (October) and Rabi (March) seasons since 1966. It provides an opportunity to the farmers to get acquainted with the latest developments in agro-technologies and farm machinery and also enables scientists, government organizations and entrepreneurs to demonstrate their products and technologies to the farmers.
