INFLUENCE OF ICT TOOLS ON SYMBOLIC ADOPTION OF CROP PROTECTION TECHNOLOGIES AMONG THE TRIBAL FARMERS

Abstract

The present study was conducted in two villages of Udhagamandalam block of the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu (India). The crop protection measures in potato crop for the pest potato tuber moth early and late blight diseases were selected as the technology. Considering its prime importance, a newness and demand from the tribal farmers and the reconnaissance survey made in the study area paved way to select the technology. Four treatments namely Interactive Multimedia Compact Disc (T1), Interactive Multimedia Compact Disc followed by discussion (T2), Computer based presentation (T3), Computer based presentation followed by discussion (T4) were tested. The present study was conducted with a specific objective to study the relationship between profile characteristics and symbolic adoption of potato tribal farmers through   Interactive Multimedia Compact Disc (IMCD) and Computer based presentation. Overall there existed significant contribution of the variables namely age, educational status, occupational status, farming experience, family type, material status, experience in potato cultivation, annual income, innovativeness, information seeking behavior and sources of getting credit towards symbolic adoption.

Advanced communication contrivances, when systematically applied and adapted to conditions in rural areas of developing countries, can be used for rural communication to increase participation, disseminate information and share knowledge and skills. Advanced communication contrivances when applied to conditions in rural areas can help improve communication, increase participation and disseminate information and share knowledge and adoption. Improved communication and information access is directly related to social and economic development.
