The development of status of women is considered as an important condition of economic welfare. Women empowerment is a global issue which has gained momentum in recent decades. Self-Help Groups (SHG) in India have endowed thousands of rural poor, especially women, not only with platforms to work together to solve common problems but also financial accessibility. The study was carried out to determine the economics of fisheries activity adopted by the women Self-help Group of the Balod Block of Durg District of Chhattisgarh who had availed loan from banking Institution for Income generating activities under Nawa-Anjor project. The basic aims of the SHGs are socio-economic development of the rural women and to inspire saving attitude among the members. Further, the SHG helps in inter member loaning provides easy and timely loan facilities as and when required. Keeping in view the present study was undertaken entitled Fisheries SHGs group: A Novel Approach for Women Empowerment in Balod Block of Durg district of Chhattisgarh. Study area was selected purposely because there was highest number of women SHGs (79) involved in economic activity and linked with banks. Out of these 79 SHGs, 09 SHGs had availed loan from banks. Present study was concentrated on Fisheries SHG which revealed that income generation from fisheries is much higher (Rs.70000.00 per hectare with 1:2.32 input output ratio) than the income generated from farm sector (Rs.52622.50 per hectare with 1:1.43 average input output ratio) and it overall enhance the family income. It also studies the income generating activities taken by SHG members as well as to identify the factors responsible for effective functioning of the SHGs.

Empowerment is a term widely used in the context of women who are equal partners in development of the society and the nation. Women empowerment is synonymous with the achievement of equality and equal mindedness in society. On one hand we are having women in top position like minister, engineers, pilots, and doctors’ etc. while on other hand, we have thousand of poverty sticken illiterate women in rural areas, which spend their life in drudgery, unaware of constitutional rights and privileges...
