Physical Impacts of Wayside Facilities on Local Area and Communities along Selected National Highways in Haryana

Abstract

Present paper analyzes the physical impacts of wayside facilities on local area and communities along national highways- 1, 2, 8 and 10 falling in Haryana. The study is based on those specific places other than cities, having clusters of at least ten facilities at single place. Fifteen respondents have been surveyed from each cluster of passenger facilities.  Therefore, a total of 330 persons including 135 from NH-1, 45 from NH-2, 60 from NH-8 and 90 from NH-10 were surveyed for the study.The present study is based on both qualitative and quantitative data. The data have been analyzed with the help of descriptive statistical techniques. The study shows that there are negative as well as positive impacts of passenger facilities on surrounding communities. The respondents are of the view that wherever there is growth of these facilities, the surrounding area is cleared of plantation to establish the facility. In case of national highway-1 majority opinion says that greenery is adversely affected by these facilities. There is hardly any impact on ground water table. In respondents’ opinion pollution due to these facilities is insignificant. These negative effects are more felt closer to the facility complex.

INTRODUCTION

      National highways are the backbone of the road infrastructure in India. These are main highways running through the length and breadth of the country connecting major ports, state capitals, large industrial and tourist centres, etc. (MORTH 1984). Total length of national highways in India was 19,800 km at the time of independence (Economic Survey 2002-03). It has increased to 70, 934 km in August, 2011. These constitute about 2 per cent of all the roads in India, but carried about 40 per cent of the total road traffic (NHAI 2012).
