The book ‘Population and Regional Development’ is the outcome of the proceedings of the national conference organized by the Department of Geography, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorkhpur University, Gorakhpur on the theme “Population Growth and Regional Development in Uttar Pradesh” on February 12 and 13, 2011. The book is a collection of 16 selected papers by various authors on certain specific problems of Uttar Pradesh including urbanization, population growth and foodgrains production, sex composition, land use pattern, and foodgrains and agricultural development. Some papers deal with national issues like population and regional development, micro-level planning, water pollution, rural development, sustainable development and role of roads in rural development. There are others that focus on micro areas like Appraisal of Resources in Maharajganj district, Population planning in Meja tahsil of Allahabad district and Riparian landforms of lower Sai valley in Jaunpur district. The foreword of the book has been written by Prof. R.P Misra, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Allahabad.

On the whole, the book is a good contribution to the development problems of Uttar Pradesh in general and Poorvanchal in particular. I congratulate Professor Dikshit and his co-editors for bringing out such a nice book which would be very useful to the students of geography in general and regional development in particular.
